Has the Marine Geospatial Community Broadened its Knowledge Base in the last 10 years?

Has the Marine Geospatial Community Broadened its Knowledge Base in the last 10 years?

John Pepper, Chairman of OceanWise, looks back at the progress made by the marine geospatial community over the last 10 years. Despite early promise, the publication of the International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO) S-100 Universal Hydrographic Data Model standard has not resulted in the hoped-for adoption of the S-101 specification for   [...]

Bangladesh Inland Waterways benefits from OceanWise's Environmental Monitoring Data Platform

We were contracted recently by Next Generation Graphics Ltd (NGGL), working for the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), to provide the data telemetry, management and visualisation components of a project to supply, install and maintain water level gauges at 53 locations across the inland waterways network, comprising tidal and non-tidal waters. ‘Port-Log’, OceanWise's widely used commercial off-the-shelf environmental monitoring data platform, was installed at BIWTA’s offices in Dhaka and is being used to collect, manage and display the data collected from this extensive network of water level (and tide) gauges.

Environmental Monitoring and Data Management in Ghana

Environmental Monitoring and Data Management in Ghana

OceanWise is supporting the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) – dubbed as “the trade and logistics hub of Western Africa” in its digitalisation programme, an essential step to becoming 'smart'. The project which is a collaborative effort between OceanWise and our Licenced Partner in West Africa, Brewzone Ventures Ltd, involved installing a comprehensive environmental monitoring system at two key GPHA ports and improving the way GPHA manages and maintains its data.

OceanWise Supports the Seabed 2030 project

Did you know that less than 20% of the world’s oceans have been surveyed to modern standards. Crazy really when we compare it to how much we know about the Moon and Mars!

The Nippon Foundation's GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project aims to rectify this. Launched at the United Nations (UN)

Covid-19 Update

We have been in 'lockdown' for over six weeks and we pleased to report that OceanWise's personnel have adapted to homeworking extremely well and we have continued to provide levels of customer services and support close to normal. Communication has been more challenging - its amazing how much a quick conversation in the office over coffee can be of benefit - and there have been delays with ordering equipment and supplies, but overall we have managed well. We have been able to undertake some 'essential' fieldwork, taking additional safety measures and following government guidance, of course.

More experimental was that we were able to undertake a site survey for an environmental monitoring system remotely using Microsoft Teams, thanks to the excellent cooperation of the customer, smart phone camera in hand. As a result, we are thinking whether and how this could become standard practice, which would reduce travel costs and carbon emissions. More about that - and our plans to reopening the office fully - in our next newsletter. In the meantime, stay safe and well and if you have any questions or concerns, then please do contact us on info@oceanwise.eu or by telephoning +44 (0) 1420 768262.

The OceanWise Team.
